Nong Joke, a youth from the SOS Children's Village Hatyai, Thailand, is currently studying in the fourth year of the Faculty of Political Science and Public Administration at Chiang Mai University. Since childhood, he has had a clear dream: He wants to pursue a career as a civil servant, whether in the military, the general civil service, or local government. The most important thing for him is to have a stable job and be able to take care of himself. Nong Joke is one of the young people who participated in the three-day "Ignite Your Success Occupation Camp” in 2024, organized by Siegwerk Thailand and SOS Children’s Villages Thailand as part of the YouthCan! program. He tells us what he gained from the camp.
Participating in the youth development camp was one of the experiences that changed me the most. It helped me see my life goals more clearly, especially in terms of preparing for work. The most valuable thing I gained from these activities was developing essential soft and hard skills. I practiced presenting, conversing, and – most importantly – expressing myself. Initially, I lacked confidence when speaking on stage, but these activities helped me to become more courageous in asking questions, speaking up, and sharing my opinions.
What I liked most was learning how the resume topic relates to human resources and financial planning. School never taught that. This knowledge can be practically applied both in job applications and in managing salaries when entering the job market. Such skills are vital because they enable me to plan my finances effectively and establish financial stability in the future. Additionally, they help me to understand the importance of managing income and expenses as well as saving money to prepare for long-term life goals.
During the camp, I had the opportunity to speak with the Siegwerk mentors in the group. They shared their knowledge and work experience, which helped me better understand the real working world. They recounted the obstacles and challenges they had faced throughout their careers, and they suggested ways to overcome various problems, such as adapting to organizational culture, developing the necessary skills for career advancement, and managing work-related stress. These insights were valuable as they will help me prepare for my future career.
The camp is more than just a training activity. It has increased my self-confidence and helped me recognize my potential. I now know that courage and ability can be developed as long as we are willing to try new things and keep an open mind.
I would like to thank the Siegwerk employees for organizing such great activities that provided us with knowledge and opportunities to learn and grow. I hope these activities will continue in the future so that the next generation can have the same chance to discover their dreams and develop themselves, just as I did.
