Paperization

Inks & Coatings

Complete coating, varnish, and ink solutions enabling the transition from plastic-based to fiber-based packaging

The challenge

Suitable applications for paper packaging can be limited due to the performance limitations of paper compared to multi-layer plastic films. This is unfortunate because paper has a well-established recovery and recycling stream. There is therefore a benefit to facilitate a wider packaging paperization scope to utilize already existing waste streams. However, we need to overcome the challenge of achieving shelf life performance when going away from complicated film-based structures.

When switching to paper, one must ensure compliance to recycling streams by avoiding unwanted/disrupting materials like PVC.

Plus paper packaging still needs to display branding and exceptional artwork reproduction to meet consumer expectations and create outstanding shelf appeal.

The solution

  • Solvent-based and water-based colored and white inks available for consistent printing results (for in-depth questions, please see our paper & board troubleshooting guide)
  • Dispersion coatings to improve barrier performance such as grease, oil and water vapor resistance.
  • Functional coatings to support pack forming and filling, such as heat-sealing.
  • Fully recyclable in existing paper recovery streams and potential for composting certification (EN 13432) to maximize material recovery options.
