Siegburg colleagues conduct Circular Economy Workshop at the Hans Alfred Keller Primary School

Germany

In early August, colleagues from Siegwerk’s Siegburg offices met with students of the Hans Alfred Keller Elementary School to explain the benefits of a Circular Economy. The school is offers an all-day program for the students which includes lunch and an afternoon program as well as dedicated homework tutoring vacation supervision. A small sustainability workshop was held with the children as part of this afternoon care program.

From Siegwerk, Ingmar Bohnert, Sales Manager Inkjet, Claudia Ossenkopp, from Technology Development Flexible Packaging EMEA and Nikole Peters, Manager Corporate Social Responsibility for Corporate Communications, joined the school’s educational staff to mentor the kids on Siegwerk and the Circular Economy.

After a brief, child-appropriate introduction to Siegwerk, the 15 children between the ages of 5 and 10 years, were able to examine different printed films displayed on their tables. These showed motifs that the children were familiar with from the supermarket, such as iced tea. By feeling, hearing and looking, the differences were quickly identifiable as either normal transparent foil or aluminum foil.

The kids were eager to participate and the topic of what goes in which garbage can was answered with a round of comments. The children also actively participated in the "shrink sleeve" process. They cut out label-sized films and shrunk them onto bottles like a second skin using a hairdryer

Things got really exciting when the "magic bath" was used to show the children how to de-ink packaging. For the children, it was like a magic trick to see how paint can be removed from a film.

“The children and the teaching staff were enthusiastic and learned a great deal about recycling; especially the fact that waste can only be recycled if it is separated correctly,” concluded Peters.

As a treat everyone received a bag of gummy bears.
