Guatemala - Siegwerk Guatemala developed specific ink training for local SOS students

2020 Local Project

Supporting SOS Children’s Villages YouthCan! program to provide job training for young adults, Siegwerk Guatemala has developed specific ink technology training classes. “Here is Guatemala, the most important issue for the young adults that live at the SOS facilities is to find a decent job,” said Luis Orozco, Country Manager Siegwerk Guatemala. “We have seen that several customers are hiring  people for the role of colorist to work at their facilities in the printing area, pre-press and ink departments, so we developed a curriculum to teach the students more.”

With the knowledge that Siegwerk has, Orozco and the team built a series of classes around colors, ink composition, printing processes and packaging. The goal was to provide current technical knowledge to help the youngsters include a certificate in their personal resume. The overall course of training includes:

  • The knowledge of the color theory
  • Ink composition: resins, pigments, additives and solvents
  • Types of inks for printing processes: flexo and offset
  • The lamination process
  • Types of packaging

Already, the first two topics have been covered in virtual training sessions due to the COVID-19 restrictions. Feedback from the students in the first two sessions has been very positive. Several of the SOS youths have studied graphic design and the Siegwerk-sponsored training complements well what they have already learned. In all, 35 young adults attended the August virtual sessions with two  more planned for September.
