Our current Lighthouse Project: the SOS Children’s Village in Jakarta

Indonesia

In 2018, Siegwerkers in Southeast Asia partnered with SOS Children’s Village to support children and young adults in programs across Indonesia. In this country, SOS oversees various initiatives for children and young adults in different SOS Children’s Villages and youth facilities and also in family strengthening programs.

The YouthCan! program is one key area where Siegwerk provides local support. Here Siegwerkers act as mentors, helping young people to build work skills and providing career guidance or direct work experience. The average age of young adults leaving SOS care in Indonesia is between 20 and 24 – just as they start to build their lives and their careers.

Indonesia is a geographically dispersed country that extends nearly 5,000 km across the equator. Made up of more than 17,000 islands, the country has a population of 260 million, the fourth largest in the world. Even though Indonesia has decreased poverty rates in recent years, more than 11 percent of the population lives under the locally-defined poverty level. Poverty is more prevalent in rural areas where only 36 percent of the population has access to proper sanitation facilities.

Digitalization project

As part of the partnership, Siegwerk is a major sponsor of the Village’s SOS family homes, youth facilities and family strengthening programs. In addition, Siegwerk supports the digitalization of the SOS Children’s Village in Jakarta, just outside the city limits and near Siegwerk operations in Indonesia. By establishing a digital library complete with computers, internet access, video conferencing facilities, software, maintenance and a dedicated project manager, local residents will be able to study and work from home without relying on public computer centers or libraries for access online. “With the Lighthouse Project in Indonesia, Siegwerk shows its commitment to the partnership with SOS Children’s Villages,” said said Nikole Peters, Manager Corporate Communications and contact for Siegwerk’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. “This is the cornerstone of Siegwerk’s community involvement to make the lives of children and young adults in need better.”
